Ratchet straps: what WLL tells you, and what it does not
A tiedown over the top does not hold your load. It presses it down, and friction holds it. Working load limit measures neither of those things — and it is still the only number on the label.
Three numbers, and only one of them is on the strap
- Break strength. What the assembly fails at. The big number in the advert.
- WLL — working load limit. One third of the break strength, by the WSTDA convention. This is the number the law counts.
- Tension. What the ratchet actually pulls into the strap when a driver throws his weight on the handle. Nobody publishes it on this side of the Atlantic, and no federal rule asks for it.
The federal requirement is a sum, in 49 CFR 393.106(d):
“The aggregate working load limit of tiedowns used to secure an article or group of articles against movement must be at least one-half times the weight of the article or group of articles.”
And a count, in 393.110(b): one tiedown for an article up to 5 ft and 1,100 lb, two if it is heavier or longer than that, and one more for every additional 10 ft.
Both are rules about capacity. Neither asks how tight anything is.

The trap in the last column
A strap advertised as “5,000 lb” is almost always quoting the break strength. Its working load limit is a third of that — about 1,666 lb — and the working load limit is what the aggregate rule counts. Buy four of those for a 20,000 lb load thinking you have 20,000 lb of capacity, and you have 6,664 lb where the rule wanted 10,000.
The Kinedyne figures show the honest version of the same relationship: 10,000 lb break, 3,333 lb WLL. Exactly one third, stated both ways, no ambiguity.
Compliant is not the same as immobile
Nothing above is a criticism of the federal rule. It is the law, it is a floor, and a floor that can be checked at a roadside inspection in thirty seconds has to be countable. But it is worth being clear about what it does and does not answer.
The aggregate WLL rule answers: if this load tries to move, is there enough rated capacity in the tiedowns to take the force? It does not answer: will it try to move?
That second question is decided by friction — the weight of the load pressing on the deck, plus whatever extra the straps press down. Which is why the European method, in EN 12195-1, starts from the friction factor and the ratchet's tension and works out the number of straps from there. Same physics, different question. You can run it on the lashing calculator on this site; it applies the European method, and the arithmetic does not care which country you are in.
The cheapest thing on this page beats all of it
Friction enters the calculation as a multiplier. Straps enter it as a sum. That is not a detail — it is the whole ranking.
Steel on a stainless deck sits around μ 0.20. A rubber friction mat under the same load takes it to about 0.60. Tripling the friction factor triples the restraint you get for free, before a single ratchet is touched, and it costs about what one strap costs.
If somebody is throwing fifteen straps at a load, the answer is almost never a sixteenth strap.
What to check on the label
- A WLL tag that is still readable. An unmarked strap has no rated capacity for an inspector, whatever it once was.
- WSTDA marking, and a manufacturer with a name on it. That is what makes the one-third relationship a fact rather than a hope.
- The end fitting matches your anchors. A flat hook and a wire hook are not interchangeable on a flatbed rub rail, and no rating fixes the wrong hook.
- Condition. Cuts, abrasion, heat glazing and a bent ratchet all take a strap out of service, and none of them change the number printed on it.
What this page is not
We have not tested any of these straps and we are not going to say we have. The figures are the ones each manufacturer publishes; the regulation is quoted from the eCFR and linked to it. Both are things you can check yourself in a couple of minutes, which is rather the point.
