Freight class calculator: density to NMFC class, 2025 rules
The NMFC changed on 19 July 2025: classification is now driven by density on a 13-step scale, and classes 500, 200, 150, 110 and 77.5 are off that scale altogether. Plenty of calculators still publish the old 18-class table. This one uses the current scale, shows the arithmetic, and tells you how close you are to the next break.
What changed in July 2025
Docket 2025-1 took effect on 19 July 2025 and it is the biggest restructuring of the NMFC in decades. Classification moved from commodity-led to density-led, and the density scale went from 11 steps to 13: the old top step (30 pcf and up, class 60) was split into three, adding classes 55 and 50 for genuinely dense freight.
The other half of the change matters just as much: classes 500, 200, 150, 110 and 77.5 no longer appear on the density scale. If a calculator hands you class 110 for a density figure, it is running the pre-2025 table.

How density is worked out
cubic feet = length × width × height (inches) ÷ 1,728 density = weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet
The dimensions are the ones the freight actually occupies on the trailer: measure to the outermost point, including any overhang, and include the pallet in the height and in the weight. A 48 × 40 × 48 inch pallet is 53.3 cubic feet, so 600 lb on it works out at 11.25 pcf — class 92.5.
Density is the primary factor since July 2025, not the only one. The NMFTA can still assign a different class for handling, stowability or liability. This gives you the density class, which is where the conversation starts — the binding answer is the NMFC item itself.
Why the next break is the number that pays
Take the example loaded above: 48 × 40 × 48 inches at 600 lb, which lands at 11.25 pcf and class 92.5. The next band down starts at 12 pcf.
To reach it you need 40 lb more on the same pallet, or the same 600 lb standing three inches shorter. Either one moves the shipment from class 92.5 to class 85 and the rate follows. That is the number this calculator puts on screen, because it is the one you can act on.
It cuts the other way too. Sitting just above a break means a little extra packaging height, or one light box added to the pallet, can push you up a class on a shipment you already quoted.
Where it stops being reliable
- Density is primary, not absolute. The NMFTA still classifies on handling, stowability and liability where those matter. Hazmat, fragile goods and awkward shapes can be classed away from their density.
- Some commodities keep their own NMFC item with a fixed class. If your product has one, that item wins over this arithmetic.
- The binding source is the NMFC itself, published by the NMFTA and available through their ClassIT subscription. This is a free calculator, not a classification authority.
- Your carrier’s tariff may differ. Some carriers rate on their own rules or on a negotiated class. Check what your contract says before you argue.
Questions people actually ask
Why did my class change in 2025 when the product did not?
Because the basis changed. Before July 2025 many commodities carried a fixed class from their NMFC item. Now density drives it, so the same product in different packaging — or on a taller pallet — can classify differently than it used to.
What happened to class 110, 150, 200 and 500?
They came off the density scale. They still exist as classes and can appear where a specific NMFC item assigns them, but no density figure produces them any more. A calculator that returns class 110 from a density number is using the pre-2025 table.
Do I include the pallet?
Yes. The height and the weight are what the shipment actually occupies and weighs on the trailer, pallet included. Leaving out a 5.5-inch, 40-pound pallet is the single most common way to get the class wrong, and it usually goes against you.
Does the number of pallets change the class?
No. Density is a ratio, so ten identical pallets classify the same as one. The count changes the total weight and the price, not the class.
Can I package to a lower class on purpose?
Yes, and it is normal practice: tighter stacking or a shorter pallet raises density and can drop a class. What you cannot do is declare figures you have not got. Carriers reweigh and remeasure, and a correction costs more than the saving.
